The Brunei Museum was established in 1965 and is located in the capital city of Bandar Seri Begawan, at Jalan Kota Batu. Given approval for a building of its own, a location was selected for the museum, on a historical site, at Kota Batu about 5km from Bandar Seri Begawan. The construction of the Brunei Museum commenced in 1968 and was completed in 1970. It was officially opened in 1972 by Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom. Visitors to the Brunei Museum can enjoy a wide variety of displays including a priceless and unique collection of art from the Islamic world. Also on display is a large private collection of elaborately gilded Holy Korans which is testament to the skill and craftsmanship of ancient calligraphers, and there is also a fine collection of treasures consisting of ceramics, glassware and carpets.
Widely known as one of the region's most beautiful structures the building stands on a hill top overlooking the Brunei River. Its ornate engravings and designs are based on traditional Malay architecture inspired by the Tomb of Sultan Bolkiah, the Fifth Ruler of the Brunei Sultanate The Brunei Museum's main exhibition galleries consist of Islamic Arts, Natural History, Oil & Gas History, Brunei Traditional Culture, Brunei Darussalam Archaeology and History.
