China is the most populous and fourth largest country in the world occupying an area of 9,600,000 square kilometers and shares borders with Afghanistan, Bhutan, Burma, India, Korea, Laos, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia and Vietnam. China has administrative control over twenty-two provinces. There are also five autonomous regions, and two Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macau that enjoy considerable autonomy. Beijing, located in the north, is China's capital with a population of 11 million people. Shanghai is China's largest city in terms of population with over 20 million people. The official language in China is Mandarin, but there are also many different dialects spoken throughout the country.
China is one of the oldest continuous civilizations in the world with records dating back about 3,500 years. The first civilizations in China arose in the Yangtze and Yellow River valleys at about the same time as Egypt and India developed their first civilizations. A land of great diversity, China has many attractions for visitors to see such as the Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Great Wall of China, Yangtze River, the Terracotta Warriors at Xi'an, the ancient cultural city of Shanghai, and the city which hosted the 2008 Olympics, Beijing. The transport system throughout the country is excellent with an extensive network providing sufficient service to the entire nation. China's climate is extremely diverse, ranging from tropical in the south to subarctic in the north.
