Rama IV, King Mongkut, had commissioned this building in 1866 as a place to retire but the king died in 1868 before completion. His statue stands at the front

Rama VII handed the palace to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs who used it as their headquarters until 1992. It was here that, on August 8, 1967, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Philippines signed a declaration founding the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN).
