Howrah Bridge, Kolkata, India

Howrah Bridge connecting Kolkata with the railway station at Howrah. The bridge's official name is Rabindra Setu after the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore although most people just refer to it as Howrah after the pontoon bridge that stood there previously. It was opened in 1943 and contains 26,500 tons of steel. One night, during construction the earth around one of the caissons (air tight containers that allow engineering work to continue below the waterline) moved causing it to fall 2 feet. The impact was so great that a seismograph at Kidderpore registered it as an earthquake and a temple on the shore was destroyed. Today the bridge carries about 100,000 vehicles and an estimated 150,000 pedestrians per day.
