David Sutton - The Mango Road

Cormorant fisherman, Yangshuo, China.

Description

The traditional method of fishing in the Lijiang River was to use trained cormorants. A snare was put around their necks to allow the birds to swallow smaller fish but not the big ones which would be retrieved for sale at the markets.

These days modern fishing methods have taken over and the remaining fishermen and their charges are reduced to giving demonstrations to tourists and posing for photos.
