Tai O village, Hong Kong

Tai O village, on the north west coast of Lantau, has been a base for the smuggling and piracy for over 300 years. Even today smuggling of guns, tobacco, drugs and people remains a documented illegal activity both into and out of mainland China. Tai O also has a history of salt production. In 1940, it was recorded that the Tai O salt flats covered 70 acres and production amounted to 1,512 metric tons.
