Wat Mahathat, Sukhothai Historical Park, Thailand

Coloured light show at Wat Mahathat, the largest and most important of all the temples at Sukhothai. The name means 'Temple of the Great Relic'. It was founded by Sri Indraditya in 1292 but construction probably continued for a number of years. It is believed the graceful lotus bud chedi was added around 1345 to house relics of the Buddha. The statue in front of the chedi shows the Buddha in the Bhumisparsha mudra, or "the earth witness", position which commemorates his victory over the temptation by the demon King Mara. The temple also features two mandapas housing nine metre tall standing Buddhas and is surrounded by lotus ponds.
